Hi, everyone! It's been a little bit since I churned out another Hot Take Hotline, but I figured now would be the perfect time to do it. I turned to my social media accounts to see what hot takes people had on their minds. As many of you know, this post doesn't exclusively feature music-related topics. I like for these to be sort of a nice diversion from some of the music I talk about on the page. With all that said, here are my responses to your submissions.
“Barstool Sports’ Call Her Daddy is severely overrated and quite frankly, toxic.”
I mean, I respect the idea behind CHD, but I think I tend to agree with this take. I’m all for letting women talk about their sexuality, feeling horny or whatever because it’s something that often gets frowned upon in mainstream media; just look at the controversy with “WAP” by Cardi and Megan thee Stallion. However, I think host Alex Cooper’s personality is where I draw the line. I just can’t stand the way she talks and talks and talks about a bunch of ridiculous stuff and expects that advice to work well for every guy. I’m tired of seeing her annoying Snapchat videos in my feed because those are even less fun to get through. Let all the horny males aged sixteen to thirty have their fun, but it’s certainly not a podcast I’m bumping all that often.
“Nicki Minaj is one of the better female rappers out there.”
Does Nicki get a lot of hate? Yeah. I’m not saying she’s this transcendent rapper who’s going to go down as one of the greatest ever, but she’s one of the better offerings on the female rap side. Of course, you have her memorable verse on “Monster,” plus a couple of decent singles back in the day like “Super Bass” and “Starships.”
“Over 80% of all modern pop artists have no talent. Ghostwriters give them good lyrics and the studios make them sound presentable.”
You ought to call this person a printer because they're spitting fax. I would say the only talent they could have is with their vocals, but other than that, the term “pop star” is really getting lost as the music corporations continue to strangle the streaming market and Billboard charts. A sad, but true revelation in the last ten to fifteen years.
“‘Young Forever’ by Jay-Z should be in consideration as one of the top ten greatest rap songs of all time.”
This is a pretty hot take. I don’t think Jay-Z is one of the greatest rappers ever, but I can tell you that I would rank many of his other songs WAY above this. If your only exposure to rap has been radio-friendly pop garbage with direct ripoffs of 80s songs, then I don’t blame you. This is not who Jay-Z embodies as a musician, and I honestly don’t know why the hell he even made a song like this to begin with.
Nothing Was The Same by Drake is better than My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy
Well, that was unexpected. There’s no denying that NWTS is probably Drake’s best, and most consistent work, but… I’m not really seeing where it’s better than something like MBDTF. I think a lot of the airy production and Auto-Croon R&B elements derive from Kanye’s own 808s & Heartbreaks to begin with. So, if Yeezy never made that, I guess we’d be stuck with Drake’s solipsistic-ass rap persona… oh wait… we still are.
“I’m going to lose all my money on sports betting.”
All I can say is make the right bets. May the sports gods be on your side.
“Billie Eilish isn’t a bad musician and I actually enjoy her music to some extent.”
I don’t think this is as hot of a take as some might think. I actually liked some of the singles off of her first EP, but last year’s When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? left me a little underwhelmed. Billie is definitely someone who’s got the potential to progress the sound of the pop genre, and I hope she uses her powers for good.
“De La Soul is one of the top three rap-groups of all time”
Definitely a hot take, but I can see where you’re coming from. I certainly have groups I would rank above them, names like Odd Future, Wu-Tang, Tribe, NWA, the Pharcyde, even one-off supergroups like the whole Dreamville or G.O.O.D Music clans come to mind. Maybe I need to get more into De La Soul’s music, but nevertheless, I’ve got nothing but positive things to say about what I’ve heard from them as of now.
“Yung Lean is just underground Lil Xan.”
See, this is the same predicament as in the Drake hot take. Without Yung Lean, there’d be no Lil Xan to speak with. Lean is a pioneer of the cloud rap genre, with so many incredible songs to sport in his discography. Even though his stuff in the last few years hasn’t been as great as the early years, I still enjoy a lot of his music to this day. I don’t even know where to begin with Lil Xan, though. The dude’s music is a barren wasteland that I feel like I never want to explore again. Yet, the dude still racks in almost TRIPLE the number of monthly listeners Lean has. It goes to show that he honestly just had more mainstream success in the States compared to Europe and other parts of the world.
So, do you agree or disagree with my takes? If you have any dissents, I'd love to hear from you guys! Feel free to reach out to me on Instagram (@bazzreviews) or email, bazzreviews@gmail.com .
Another quick update on BazzFest: To think we are just under ten days away from the festival going "live" on YouTube is pretty insane. I have announced an official time for the festival's premiere- 9:00 PM EST / 8:00 PM CST / 6:00 PST. Unfortunately, we are saddened to announce that two artists, Lo'Fi Boy and Inner State 81, have had to withdraw from the festival due to unforeseen circumstances. We have a substitute artist joining our lineup, though: TikTok personality Chandler Cooper. I want to personally thank him for accepting a rather last-minute invitation, and we welcome him to the event. In the meantime, stay tuned on the bazzreviews Instagram page to see some more artist profiles and up-to-date information on the fest. Hope to see you guys there virtually on October 16th! Thanks for checking this out.
