HOT TAKE HOTLINE- #2

Hi, everyone! Based on the success of the last HTH, I decided to reach out to my supporters once again and asked for their various hot takes. It’s been a while since I did one of these, and I figured you guys would want something different to read other than interviews or months in review. To add other ideas to this chain, I also looked on sites like Reddit and Genius to find some fun hot takes to answer. Anything and everything can be discussed, and here’s what people submitted.

“My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy may be the worst album of all time”

I don’t know what makes you think that. I’m somewhat biased towards Yeezy, but what constitutes the record as bad? It’s so damn well-written and produced, how can you hate it. Kanye wrote the record after dropping off of the face of the earth, and put so much time into making MBDTF amazing. It still stands out as one of the best records of the 2010s, maybe even one of the greatest of all time. There’s not much more I have to say about that.

“Wilt Chamberlain is the GOAT”

Wilt played in a completely different era of basketball, so I think you should take his unusual 50.4 points per game average into consideration. He was 7’1, a rarity in the NBA at that time. All he’d have to do was just take two dribbles and go in for a layup. He scored 100 points by doing that... Not original, dude. I think while all of it is crazy to say the least, he still won fewer championships than other legends had. The dude only won two championships and an average supporting cast until his days in Los Angeles. His Finals wins aren’t as memorable as Magic Johnson’s 4 and Larry Bird’s 3, nor is it anywhere close to MJ’s six. I’d also like to mention that his scoring and minutes per game declined sharply as his career progressed. MJ stayed very active in almost every season he played, same with Kobe Bryant and LeBron James. If we’re talking about his womanizing skills, Wilt wins without question. What man can brag about sleeping with over 20,000 women in their lifetime?

“Jimmie Johnson should be considered one of the three greatest NASCAR drivers of all time”

I haven’t watched NASCAR in ages, but I remember how great of a driver JJ was. I know this might sound really stupid, but does NASCAR actually have all that much strategy? It’s honestly about drafting and knowing when to pass and stuff. It’s more luck than anything… but I digress. If I look at statistics, Jimmie Johnson stands sixth all-time in races won. I don’t really know all that much about NASCAR to begin with, but based on his stats, I think he could definitely be compared to legends like Richard Petty, Darrell Waltrip, Dale Earnhardt, Sr, or Jeff Gordon.

“90s hip-hop is boring”

I don’t know why you would think that. So many of the rappers that came out of that era did so much to influence the way rap is made today. I get it, the beats sound fairly alike if you listen really closely. They might sound a little dated for today’s standards, also. At the same time, East Coast rappers made smart, witty poetry and other dense lyrics that really need a comeback in our rap game today. A lot of the West Coast G-funk and gangsta rap is more like the rap we have today. Well… some of it. Unfortunately, the crap that is popular today is just mumbling about club life or other BS like that. My only wish is that we have artists similar Wu-Tang Clan or Tribe Called Quest in today’s rap scene.

“Americans don’t like listening to foreign music”

I think that’s slightly a generalization. I think Americans only listen to foreign music that’s popular, mainly Latin-American reggaeton that hits the Billboard charts. K-Pop bands like BTS are also making a big entrance in the popular music scene as well. Anything outside of that realm is almost a mystery to some of us. That’s really disappointing, if you ask me. So many people miss out on the amazing music from countries like Japan, China, India or anything in the European Union. Hearing music in a different language may sound weird at first, but I think you should put that behind you. Some of my favorite songs spoken in foreign languages include “まともがわからない” (“Don’t Know What’s Normal”) by Japanese musician Shintaro Sakamoto or “Einmal Um Die Welt” by German musician Cro. I think once you start opening your horizons, you can find some really amazing tunes in a different language.

“Childish Gambino’s best song is ‘3005’”

Is the sky blue? If so, I think you have your answer.

“Oxygen poisoning will take 75-100 years to kill us”

I’m no scientist, but researchers have definitely found evidence to support it. Many outlets reported that we have around 10-12 years to fix our global climate change problem or we’re screwed. I’m sure oxygen poisoning is possible to kill us in the future, but I think that we need to give our environment the help it needs. Instead of putting so much damn money in our military or a “border wall”, our government’s money needs to be reassigned to take any measures that are necessary to save our environment! As Bill Nye said in his recent viral video, "The world is on f-----g fire!"

“2PAC's flow was monotonous, and California Love is utter garbage”

No question. I just have never really found any appeal with 2PAC’s music, and I don’t know if I ever will. He just doesn’t really present as much rap-wise as other West Coast rappers of the time did. As for “California Love” I do like it, but only because it features a far superior West Coaster, Dr. Dre.

Tical by Method Man is the best Wu-Tang solo project”

That’s a funny way to say Liquid Swords by GZA. Don’t get me wrong, Tical is a great album by one of the better rappers from Wu-Tang. At the end of the day, Swords has a very special place in my heart. GZA might not be as great of a rapper as guys like him, Killah, or RZA, but his lyricism more than makes up for that on the record.

“Run the Jewels is going surpass Outkast as the greatest hip-hop duo of all time.”

This is actually a really interesting take. While I think Outkast is great, I feel like some of their discography is not as great as it should be. Run the Jewels has stayed consistent from their debut album, and they show no sign of stopping their dominance. At the same time, how would you rank them up against classics like Clipse, Mobb Deep, or Black Star? That’s where it gets tough for me. After they release a few more quality LPs I could see RTJ cementing their place in history.

So, do you agree with my stances? Is there something that wasn’t covered that you want me to talk about in the future? If so, feel free to reach out to me! Thanks again for checking this article out, more amazing stuff is on its way!
